Visual Basic (VB) is a third-generation event-driven programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft for its COM programming model first released in 1991. Visual Basic is designed to be relatively easy to learn and use. Visual Basic was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid application development (RAD) of graphical user interface (GUI) applications, access to databases using Data Access Objects, Remote Data Objects, or ActiveX Data Objects, and creation of ActiveX controls and objects. Scripting languages such as VBA and VBScript are syntactically similar to Visual Basic, but perform differently.
A programmer can put together an application using the components provided with Visual Basic itself. Programs written in Visual Basic can also use the Windows API, but doing so requires external function declarations. Though the program has received criticism for its perceived faults,[3] from version 3 Visual Basic was a runaway commercial success,[4] and many companies offered third party controls greatly extending its functionality.
Visual Basic has various advantages in software development as it makes the users task extremely simple. With the drag and drop features and event -driven environment in the frame VB 6.0 gained a lot of momentum in the initial days Nowadays ,however VB is obsolete with its successor VB.NET in the market. Still most colleges, have VB in their curriculum for students as it paves the basic way for application development.
Pune University has introduces VB in the curriculum of TE Engineering for Computer and IT Students as a part of the practicals under Mini Project Development. The 2008 pattern syllabus has made Mini Project in TE Sem 1 External for the IT students and internal for the Computer Engineering students. Students however have been given the liberty to use any convenient language of their choice for Front End and SQl as back end using Oracle, MS Access or MySQL. Most students, either prefer VB or VB.NET as their front end for the mini project.
